  1. Term 1 2012 Room 5 Class Newsletter

    Dear Parents/Caregivers,

I am really excited to be teaching your children this year. At present there are 23 children in the class.
This year I am encouraging the children to be more independent in their routines. I hope that the information on this handout will provide you with an insight so that you can encourage them whenever possible.
A reminder that school starts at 8.55am, but the children need to be at school by 8.45am at the latest so they can organise their belongings and be ready to start school when the bell goes.

I would also like to welcome Jacqui Holland to our class. Jacqui is in her last year at Teachers College and will spend the whole year in our class. She will be teaching every Monday and will have two longer postings later on in the year.

Room 5 Programme for Term 1 will be:
This term we will be concentrating on establishing classroom routines, literacy and numeracy, and setting our personal goals. In addition to these, we have swimming starting this week for two weeks, all children will need to wear sports uniform for the two weeks.

    Maths –
For numeracy we will be covering addition and subtraction.
The strands work we will explore aspects of statistics, geometry and volume.
Please practise counting forwards and backwards in 1’s and 2’s up to 20. As your child becomes more confident and accurate, then extend this counting to include 5’s and 10’s up to 100; basic facts to include all the addition and subtraction sums for 5, 10 and 20. Some children will at a later date begin a basic facts programme that they will practice at home for homework each night.

    Religious Education –
The first two weeks we will look at prayer and the Charism of Sacred Heart School. Later we will focus on the Jesus Strand. We will also celebrate the Liturgical Events of Lent and Holy Week.
The children have an exercise book that will have sheets glued into it. It may come home from time to time. Please could these be returned to school each day, even if the activity has not been completed.

Literacy – Instructional reading lessons are Monday through to Thursday. Some children may read with another teacher in another class. Each day the children will bring reading home. The text that your child brings home may be the book they have read that day in an instructional reading session, or a book of their own choosing from their browsing basket. Generally it is desired that the book be reasonably easy in order to encourage “smooth reading” but your child may need assistance with new vocabulary. Smooth reading is when the reading is fluent, sounds like normal talking and has some expression. Your child will bring home a poem on Friday, which this term will be based around phonics, you can read this together and talk about the sounds/blends you see and hear. It is important that your child works on their reading skills as this develops self-confidence and ensures success in many curriculum areas. They will bring a yellow reading log home each night too. Please sign this to provide me with an indication that reading is being done at home. This book may be used as a form of communication between home and school if you wish.

  2. Writing this term we will focus on personal recounts, making sure that we include What? Where? Why? How? When? as well as how we may have felt.
Spelling – Children in Room 5 are given spelling words to learn from a list of Essential words that they need to know. These words are common words that the children will use in their own writing and will see when they are reading. A new spelling list is given to the children each Monday and tested on Friday. A guide to the teaching of spelling will be glued into the back of your child’s spelling notebook. Later in the year we will begin using the SMART words spelling programme. These words will be in family groups so the learning may be easier once your child has learnt the rule.

    Physical Education
Swimming starts this week and will go for two weeks. We will swim between 1-2pm, apart from Wednesdays where we will swim between 12:45 – 1:45. We always need parents in both changing rooms if you could help with this it would be greatly appreciated. Please ensure your children’s belongings are named. Please ensure that your child wears their sports uniform to and from school each Thursday and Friday once swimming has finished as s/he will be involved in PE/Sports activities

The Arts -We will be exploring shape and colour using different mediums including paint and pastel.

Library – Our library day will be on a Friday. Books are only issued for one week but it may be reissued if it is required for longer.

Drink bottles – The children are encouraged to have a plastic bottle of water in the classroom to drink from during the course of the day.

Uniform – The children must leave at the end of the day in their uniforms, including shoes. During the day, girls may remove their tunics if they have shorts underneath but must put them back on during class and at the end of the day. Please ensure that any child with long hair comes to school with their hair tied back off their faces. It would be helpful too if you could let me know if your child has head lice, so that a note may be sent home to all parents.

    Communication -
I will be setting up an email tree, which I will use for communication including newsletters etc if you have an email address, can you please email me with your email address to the email below. I encourage you to use email as a way of communicating to myself or to the school.
If you would like to speak to me in the morning I am available up until 8:40am anytime after this you will need to make a suitable time after school to meet.
If you have any problems or wish to speak with me at anytime please don’t hesitate to contact me.

  3. Term 2 up-date
    Room 5 Class Newsletter

    Dear Parents/Caregivers,

We have had a great start to the term and are now half way into Term 2. Wow, that has gone fast!
As you will know we have Jacqui Holland, who is a third year student from Otago University in our class. As of today she will be teaching the class for the next three weeks, I will be around but she will be in control of the overall running of the class.
A reminder that school starts at 8.55am, but the children need to be at school by 8.45am at the latest so they can organise their belongings and be ready to start school when the bell goes.
In Term 4 we will be having our school fair. We really need to have parents on board to help with this, as the saying goes “many hands make light work” it would be great to have as many parents help out as we can. We do need a coupe of parents to represent our class in the Fair Committee if you are interested please let me know ASAP. Without your help this will not go ahead.

Room 5 Programme for Term 2:
This term we will be concentrating on, literacy and numeracy, while also being introduced to the Inquiry process.

    Maths –
For numeracy we will be covering knowledge and strategies of addition and subtraction.
The strands work we have covered Probability and will later look at Temperature and Weight.
Every child has now got a set of Basic Facts cards to take home each night. These need to come back daily, as they are a part of our numeracy rotation. Some children may have a lot of cards in their pack, and will be separated into two or three parts. Please read the post it note in the bag as to which cards to do first. Once your child is able to QUICKLY recall these they can then put them into the “to be tested” basket ready for me to test. Please try to encourage your child to take care of these, if they are lost there will be a charge of $2 to replace them.

    Religious Education –
We are now half way through the Holy Spirit Strand and will begin the God Strand near the end of the term.

Literacy – Instructional reading lessons are Monday through to Thursday. Some children may read with another teacher in another class. Each day the children will bring reading home. The text that your child brings home may be the book they have read that day in an instructional reading session, or a book of their own choosing from their browsing basket. Your child is also more than welcome to read a book from home or the public library. Writing this term we will focus on instructions and poems. Near the end of the term the children will get a poem to bring home and practice reading out loud.

Spelling –This term we have finished the SMART words programme. I have tested the children on the essential spelling word lists and have grouped them accordingly.

Inquiry – We started off looking at the Olympics and have now been looking at what a culture is and what it looks like. We have our celebration day on 13th September where we will look at different, art, music and dances of cultures within our school followed by a shared lunch.

    Physical Education
We have been focusing on rotation and swing. The children have loved going out to the confidence course using swing and rotation to get through and over the obstacles, I have been very impressed with the children setting their own challenges and showing persistence to help achieve them.

The Arts -We will explore a number of different constructions techniques. The children may have mentioned that we also learned to play 3 notes on the Glockenspiels and discussed how and why each note sounded different.
